Pictures

The 19th century cannot truly come to life without reference to the visual elements that reflected it. Whether it’s a set-design for an opera or the formal portrait of a composer, a signature on a score or a concert-ticket, every image from the Romantic era leads to our better understanding of the economic, social and artistic history of the period. Even the theatrical flourishes of arm-waving virtuosi in full-flight recorded in certain pictures bear witness to the fact that the century of Paganini and Sarah Bernhardt was an age in which theatre and opera were held in almost holy esteem. In this section, you’ll find a diverse range of documentation, much of it the product of cataloguing and digitizing undertaken in conjunction with French or overseas institutions.
