Berlioz, Chopin, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Bizet … More often than not, the so-called “geniuses” of their time and their justly-famous works are the main point-of-entry to French music of the 19th century. Focus on their extraordinary individual careers offers insight into the distinct personality of each and the unique character of their work. The fame of a handful of musicians may have survived into our time but the names of many others have been lost to history. From composers erased from our collective memory for aesthetic or political reasons to performers replaced in the public’s heart by a new generation of artists, the history of French music is a rich weave of fleeting fame and singular individuals whose careers can shed new light on the art form itself.
