Mazeppa. Prinzregententheater, Munich
Mazeppa. Drame lyrique in five acts and six tableaux by Clémence de Grandval, libretto by Charles Grandmougin and Georges Hartmann, first performed at the Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux on 23 April 1892.
After composing various stage works (generally under pseudonyms), then taking an interest in instrumental music and becoming involved in the Société Nationale de Musique, Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907) turned to her last major composition, the opera Mazeppa. Inspired by the historical figure Ivan Mazeppa, a Cossack military leader, the opera was acclaimed by the press at its premiere in Bordeaux: ‘Mazeppa has inspired Mme C. de Grandval to produce a truly remarkable score, the success of which will cause a great stir in the music world.’
