Premiered in the third Salle Favart on 20 November 1901, Grisélidis was the concrete realisation of the project for a ‘lyrical tale’ (conte lyrique) that Massenet had long nurtured. Albert Carré’s production reflected the subtle alchemy between naturalism and symbolism so characteristic of the renewal of theatre in which the Opéra-Comique played an active part at the beginning of the twentieth century.
